Calcium L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate · The active biological form of folate
Folic acid (the synthetic form of vitamin B9) must first be converted by the MTHFR enzyme into methylfolate before it can enter the cells. Approximately 40–60% of the global population carries a genetic polymorphism that reduces this enzyme's efficiency; for these individuals, standard folic acid supplementation falls short.
